Le terme taxi provient de taximètre (du grec ancien taxi- signifiant taxe et -mètre signifiant mesure) , appareil destiné à mesurer à la fois le temps et la distance d'un trajet pour établir le montant à payer par le passager. Ce taximètre est également appelé compteur horokilométrique.

Dans certains pays, les taxis utilisent une petite affiche lumineuse (ou lumineux) pour indiquer s'ils sont libres. En Argentine, elle est appelée banderita, nom qui vient des taximètres mécaniques, dans lesquels on tournait un petit drapeau en le dissimulant pour commencer un voyage, et qui, à la fin du voyage, revenait à sa position visible.
